About the event
Spoonshot 2026: New Algorithms, Existing Hardware
What would it take to bring new capabilities to diabetes devices faster, with the evidence to support them?
A hands-on working day for people building diabetes technology and people living with it. In the morning, we’ll tackle a difficult product decision. In the afternoon, we’ll design the evidence needed to make faster software updates possible, connecting patient needs, product engineering, quality and cybersecurity.
Agenda – Check back for updates
Thursday, October 29, 2026 · 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM PT, happy hour to follow · San Diego
8:00 · Coffee and connections
Meet the people bringing different pieces of the problem: pumps, sensors, algorithms, software security and everyday life with T1D.
8:30 · Start with people: what should better technology make possible?
Your I/O one-liner to break the ice. Then ground the day in the benefits people want, the burdens they face and the capabilities we bring to the room.
9:00 · Landscape panel: where diabetes technology stands today, and where the openings are
What has changed since 2025 across devices, algorithms, software and regulation? Where are the biggest opportunities to deliver more for people living with T1D, and what tools, evidence or decisions would unlock them?

10:30 · A wicked decision: when patients innovate ahead of the product
Led by Sara Eggers, facilitated by Kristien Van Vlasselaer.
Step into the role of a pump-company CEO. An open-source community has connected your pump to their own automated insulin delivery system. Do you leave it alone, try to stop it, help the community or pursue a supported path onto your platform?
In this hypothetical exercise, we’ll examine the benefits, risks, business implications and uncertainties behind each choice. Which evidence could change your decision?
12:00 · Working lunch: build a shared benefit-risk map
Compare perspectives and identify the uncertainties that matter most. Carry those questions into the afternoon’s design work.
1:00 · Technical design workshop: build the evidence pipeline
Design a solution architecture for integrated, full-stack software validation and testing, the way the App Store works.
We’ll work out what to test, what evidence to collect, and how to connect results to product decisions. That includes how threat models focus testing and how failures and adverse events turn into new tests.
3:00 · Compare, challenge and carry it forward
Share the proposed approaches. What changed your thinking? What can your team or community build on? What evidence or collaboration would unlock the next step?
4:00 · Happy hour nearby

Registration
Attendance is by invitation. Seats are limited to 30 to keep the room at working size; we confirm every request by email.
Attendance is free. Optional donations to help cover travel for patient and regulatory participants are warmly appreciated, but never required.
Jensen Huang describes NVIDIA in one line: “NVIDIA is a simple company. We turn electrons into tokens.”
Your I/O statement applies a similar idea to your organization: what goes in, what comes out, in one line.
Helpful preparation: Consider drafting a one-line I/O statement for your organization before the workshop. It will help ground our discussions, but you do not need one to request a seat or attend.
Choose “Request a Seat” and complete the registration form. We’ll confirm your seat by email.
Who belongs in the room?
Pump and sensor manufacturers' product, engineering, quality and safety teams: help define a credible path to faster updates.
Cybersecurity and testing practitioners: connect threats and system behavior to meaningful evidence.
People with T1D, caregivers and open-source contributors: define what better technology must accomplish. Lived experience is essential, not an afterthought.
Clinical and regulatory contributors: help connect evidence to practical decisions.
Other interested participants may be considered as space allows. If you want to attend and don’t see yourself above, email shannon@shannonlantzy.com.
Pre-reads will be sent to confirmed participants the week before the workshop: the 2025 post-workshop report, a short annotated reading list, and the scenario packet built from public data.
Preparation: If possible, bring a one-line I/O statement for your organization and complete the “Snake Oil or Superstar?” self-assessment.
Sponsorship
Tandem Diabetes is the sponsor-host. Medtech Throughput Labs is the convening sponsor. Additional sponsorships pay for food, drink, and facilitation; no one else is paid, and any surplus seeds the next Spoonshot. Each sponsorship includes recognition on site, materials, and during the workshop.
Happy Hour Sponsor – $2,500 (one available): recognition as host of the post-workshop happy hour
Breakfast or Break Sponsor – $1,000 (one each: breakfast, morning break, afternoon break): recognition during breakfast or break
In-kind sponsorships are welcome: day-of logistics and A/V support, photography/videography, marketing and communications.
